Can UV sensor-based solar tracking improve the smoothness of solar tracking movements?
In this paper, a novel UV sensor-based dual-axis solar tracking system is proposed to simultaneously improve the smoothness of solar tracking movements and PV energy generation.
How does solar tracking work?
The solar tracking system was implemented on a pseudo-azimuthal mounting structure, which was capable of following the sun’s trajectory through daily and elevation angles. The proposed tracking system considered the comparisons of UV sensor signals obtained by UV sensors mounted on the axes of rotation to track the sun’s position.
Does a solar tracking system increase energy production?
The study evaluates two PV systems-one fixed and one with a sun tracker to analyze the increase in daily energy production achieved by the tracking system while accounting for its energy consumption (Lazaroiu et al., 2015). Using a PV source, an MPPT power converter, and a 12 V, 40Ah battery, two low-power PV systems were constructed.

Specifically, most of the sensor-based solar tracking systems are based on closed-loop control, particularly using LDRs, which are commonly cadmium sulfide (CdS) type and detect visible light spectrum, as inputs to tracking algorithms.

On sunny days, both the tracking systems effectively followed the sun’s position owing to the capability of its sensors, i.e., UV sensors and LDRs. Apparently, the proposed tracking system generated more energy than the LDR-based tracking system.

The sun-pointing sensor is used in solar energy tracking systems to capture maximum power by photovoltaic (PV) cells or systems at the time of uniform or partial irradiance of the sun and effect of shade during clouds. PV cells or modules’ generating power is affected due to partial shading.
