Benefit of DSWH system: The solar hot water system efficiency in downtown Shanghai was 42.9% with considering the impact of solar radiation, water temperature, and ambient temperature (Yao et al., 2017). In this study, 42.9% was also adopted as the DSWH system efficiency.

Are all buildings suitable for solar energy utilization?

But due to the building occlusion problem, not all buildings are suitable for solar energy utilization. Therefore, the assessment of solar energy utilization for each building to find out where and how to effectively use solar energy is helpful for the future sustainable urban development.

How many rooftops are there in Shanghai?

According to the quadrant-based segmentation method, the rooftop type of each building was detected. A total of 87,802 building rooftops within the downtown of Shanghai were identified as gable rooftops, and 101,207 building rooftops were identified as flat rooftops. Huajing town (Fig. 9) was selected as a validation area.

Can solar energy utilization potential be predicted at the building scale?

It is not easy to be predicted at the building scale. We have to design two scenarios which assumed that all the Shanghai region used either PV panels or DSWH systems in the procedure of the solar energy utilization potential evaluation.

The cost of a PV system utilization is calculated based on its power level. The average cost of a PV system is about 10,000 Chinese Yuan [CNY] (∼1,430 US Dollars) per kilowatts (kW), including the material, installation, and maintenance cost (Lv & Wang, 2013; Zhang, 2013; Wen & Qiu, 2018).
