In recent years, Niue has implemented three grid-connected solar PV systems, solar water heaters, and LPG gas stoves in homes, all installed at a subsidized cost since renewable energy technology was very costly, particularly for the pacific islands´ citizens. The Government of Niue is expecting savings to the tune of NZ$137,000 per annum with the recent commissioning of their solar photovoltaic system project. The US$4 million initiative is expected to provide significant benefits to the people of Niue through the supply of solar-generated electricity throughout the entire island nation.

Will Niue be able to generate more solar energy?

Previous funding for solar panels and energy storage will bring Niue’s renewable generation from 13 per cent last year to 40 percent this year – and more is on the way. “We will provide a further $5 million to support the development of solar energy generation in Niue.

How did New Zealand support Niue's battery energy storage system?

In addition to Australia’s support, the New Zealand Government contributed $2.5 million to relocate and restore Niue’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This funding has allowed the Ministry to repair the grid control system, procure necessary fuel tanks, and install cabling and connections.
