What is the ESB battery project?
The battery is part of a project pipeline, representing an investment of up to EUR 300 million (USD 323m), that ESB is executing at sites in Dublin and Cork in support of Ireland’s climate targets and ESB’s Net Zero by 2040 strategy. The project at ESB’s Poolbeg Energy Hub in Dublin has been in operation since late November 2023.
Where is ESB located?
It is located at Poolbeg Energy Hub, where ESB – around 95% owned by the Irish state with the remaining stake held by its employees – is planning to deploy a combination of clean energy technologies, including offshore wind, hydrogen, and battery storage, over the coming decade.
How much does ESB cost to build a battery plant?
ESB built the battery plant at a cost of around €75 million, working with New York-listed energy storage specialist Fluence, Irish engineers Kirby Group and national grid operator EirGrid. Mr Dollard explained that the batteries would support grid stability and allow more renewables on the Irish electricity system.
How much is ESB spending on battery storage?
ESB is spending €300 million on battery storage facilities that will have a total capacity of 300 megawatts (MW), and Mr Dollard said that the group was likely to embark on more such projects those once those are completed.
