Swiss wind and solar energy storage project

For wind and solar power plants to reach their full potential, they need storage systems. A Swiss start-up is introducing a gravity-based battery solution. It is an extraordinary energy storage facility that has recently been completed in the Rudong district of Shanghai, China. Switzerland aims to rely solely on renewable energy by 2050. Building more solar panels and wind turbines plays a crucial role in achieving this goal – and so does artificial intelligence.

Which energy storage projects have been commissioned in Switzerland?

Axpo commissioned its BESS in February this year while utility Thurplus commissioned a 3MW system in September last year. But Switzerland was the location for one of the largest energy storage projects commissioned in recent years, a 20GWh pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) unit which started operations in June 2022 in the Canton of Valais.

Where in Switzerland can wind and solar energy be generated?

The calculation revealed that the greatest potential for the generation of wind and solar energy lies in the western half of Switzerland – especially around the cities of Geneva, Lausanne and Berne.

Is solar energy better than wind energy in Switzerland?

Despite those limitations, our study shows what the minimum amount of electricity trade with the neighboring countries would be in a fully renewable Switzerland. As described in subsection 3.4, the average import power during winter would lie between 1 GW and 2 GW, depending on the winter environmental conditions.
