Cost structure of generation technologies. Electricity generation technologies vary dramatically in their cost structure. Some plants, such as nuclear, wind and solar power, have virtually zero variable costs. This is in stark contrast to fossil fuel based power plants.

Most power stations are designed to run for 20 to 60 years (‘technical lifetime’). Thus even though fixed costs are incurred at the time of investment, for analytical purposes it make sense to translate the fixed costs incurred in annualized terms i.e. calculate the cost of constructing the station per each year of its technical life.
