The edge seal is exposed to UV radiation and different weather conditions during the lifetime of the module. Moisture ingress will degrade the performance of a PV module. An advantage of the glass-glass configuration is that moisture ingress can occur only along the perimeter of the module.

Cost analysis indicated that the double edge seal with interlayer laminate of polyolefin or polyethylene significantly reduced the cost of the polymers when compared to glass-EVA-glass modules. Polymer extrusion and injection molding were the processes that can be used for the fabrication of thin film PV modules with the identified materials.
