In this paper, we review recent energy recovery and storage technologies which have a potential for use in EVs, including the on-board waste energy harvesting and energy storage technologies, and multi-vector energy charging stations, as well as their associated supporting facilities (Fig. 1). Mobile energy storage systems are being deployed in jurisdictions around the world, and—as demonstrated by a 2023 New Year''s Day mobile energy storage system fire—accidents can happen. We want to make sure communities are prepared for when these systems are deployed in their backyard.
